Confirm the number on your old valve first.
  • - The IPR sits in the high pressure oil pump and meters how much oil goes to the injectors. The computer commands it by duty cycle and reads the result back through the ICP sensor, so the valve is what actually sets injection control pressure. The 7.3L needs roughly 500 psi of oil pressure before an injector will fire, which is why a worn or sticking IPR turns into a crank with no start.
  • - Symptoms of a failing IPR: extended cranking, no start hot or cold, stalling at idle, surging at a steady throttle, rough running, loss of power, and a check engine light. Stored codes are usually P1280, P1283, P1211 and P1212, and a scan tool will show injection control pressure that does not follow the commanded duty cycle or that never builds while the engine is being cranked.
  • - Fits the 7.3L Powerstroke without an edge filter, roughly 1995.5 through 2003 and engine serial number 187,100 up: Ford F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty, E-350 and E-450 vans, F-650 and F-750, and Excursion 2000-2003, plus Navistar T444E, DT466E and I530E. Earlier engines below that serial number take the edge filter version, so compare the nose of your old valve first.
  • - Three o-rings come fitted on the valve. Installation takes a 1-1/8 inch deep socket: unplug the two pin connector, back the old valve out of the high pressure oil pump, wipe the bore out, oil the new o-rings, thread the valve in by hand so nothing rolls off the seat, torque it to the figure in your service manual, and reconnect. Expect some oil at the bore, so keep a rag under it.
